In the challenging landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, a young changemaker named Krishna Saproo embarked on a journey that transcended regional boundaries, weaving together diverse cultures in the pursuit of mental health awareness. As a younger student, Krishna faced the daunting task of convincing individuals to open up about their mental health struggles. Undeterred, he turned to knowledge, immersing himself in books, research materials, and reaching out to people in an effort to better understand and address their needs.

The catalyst for Krishna’s unwavering dedication came in the form of a small incident in his classroom, where a visibly withdrawn and silent classmate became a poignant symbol of the struggles faced by many. This moment of realization propelled Krishna to take proactive steps in breaking the silence surrounding mental health, an issue exacerbated by the complex backdrop of conflict and strife.

One transformative moment occurred during a webinar where Krishna was invited as a guest speaker. Instead of the typical responses, the chat section buzzed with excitement, dubbing him “Dr. Strange.” This unexpected nickname not only brought joy to Krishna but also signified a broader recognition of mental health as a noble cause. The audience praised him for changing mindsets, solidifying his role as a catalyst for positive change.

While Krishna’s organization, Maunitva Nirakaran, had its roots in Jammu and Kashmir, its growth found fertile ground in Chennai. This expansion marked a unique intersection of cultures, bridging the gap between the northern and southern regions of India. Krishna’s distinct identity adds an intriguing layer to this narrative — a Kashmiri with a South Indian flair, earning him affectionate titles such as “Mallu from Kashmir,” “Kannadiga,” and proudly, a “Tamizha.” This blend of cultural influences reflects not only the diversity of India but also Krishna’s ability to connect with people across regions. He that’s why is considered half South-Indian.

Beyond geographical boundaries, Krishna’s journey exemplifies the harmonious integration of different cultures, echoing the essence of his mission: to break the stigma surrounding mental health. His story serves as an inspiration for young advocates, demonstrating that positive change knows no bounds and can thrive in the unlikeliest of places.

Krishna Saproo: NammaThala

As Krishna Saproo continues to bridge worlds and minds for mental health, his unique journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of empathy, education, and the universal language of compassion.

Maunitva Nirakaran operates at the grassroots level, bridging the gap between individuals in need and mental health experts. Through webinars, podcasts, open-mics, debates, and plantation drives, the organization actively engages with the community, reaching over 400 people across 20+ cities and overseas. Krishna’s relentless pursuit of breaking the silence surrounding mental health is evident in the organization’s success stories, such as identifying symptoms of PTSD in a child through a family’s unique connection to the Jhelum River.

Looking to the future, Krishna envisions a societal mindset revolution. His ambition extends beyond the individual cases addressed by Maunitva Nirakaran, aiming to de-stigmatize seeking help for mental health on a broader scale. With dreams of integrating mental health awareness into school curriculum, Krishna seeks to equip future generations with the tools needed for understanding and empathy.

Through his unwavering dedication, he not only sheds light on the shadows of mental health but also paves the way for a more compassionate and enlightened future in India.
